St. Martin de Porres also know as Martin of Charity; the Saint of the Broom symbolic of his devotion to his work regardless of how menial the task. He was said to beg more than $2000 a week from the rich to give to the poor. He was born in 1579 in Lima, Peru. The son of a Spanish nobleman and a freed black slave. He became a Dominican brother after his superiors dropped the stipulation that “no black person may be received to the holy habit or profession of our order”. He was venerated from the day of his death in 1639. St. Martin de Porres’s feast day is on November 3rd.
